Walking through the rainforest.

Overview

Marangu is the only route on Kilimanjaro with huts. You sleep in bunk beds in shared huts instead of tents, and this six-day version adds a rest day at Horombo to help your body adjust.

The path is wide and steady, through rainforest with blue and colobus monkeys, out onto the moorland and across the Saddle to Kibo Hut. Summit night climbs loose scree to Gilman's Point and along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak.

Huts are shared with other climbers. You go up and down the same path, so there is less variety than on Machame or Lemosho, but more comfort at night.

Questions

Before you book

Is Marangu the easiest route?

The path is the gentlest, but the summit night is steep and the altitude is the same. The extra day at Horombo makes a real difference.

What are the huts like?

Simple shared huts with bunk beds and mattresses. A warm sleeping bag is included.

Is there a shorter version?

Yes, a 5-day Marangu climb; the 6-day version adds the rest day at Horombo, which helps your body adjust.
