A quieter start and the wide Shira Plateau
Barranco Camp under the Barranco Wall.
Lemosho starts on the far western side of the mountain, away from the busier routes, in mossy forest where colobus monkeys live. It crosses the whole Shira Plateau before joining the southern circuit.
Day 2 is long, about 15 km across the plateau with Kibo ahead, so good fitness helps. After that the route follows the proven pattern: the Lava Tower, Barranco, Karanga and Barafu, then summit night.
Your team includes licensed guides, a cook, porters and a private toilet tent.

Fewer people in the first days
Beautiful forest and the Shira Plateau
Good acclimatisation profile

Lemosho Gate (about 2,385 m) → Big Tree Camp (about 2,780 m)
A long drive around the mountain to Londorossi gate to register, then to the Lemosho trailhead. A short first walk on a narrow path through mossy forest to a camp among tall trees.
Big Tree Camp (about 2,780 m) → Shira 1 (about 3,500 m) → Shira 2 (about 3,900 m)
Out of the forest onto moorland and up to the rim of the Shira Plateau, an old volcanic crater filled with lava. Lunch near Shira 1, then across the open plateau to Shira 2, Kibo ahead. The longest walking day before the summit.

Shira 2 (about 3,900 m) → Lava Tower (4,640 m) → Barranco Camp (3,960 m)
Up through alpine desert to the Lava Tower for lunch, then down into the Barranco Valley among giant groundsels. Climb high, sleep lower.
Barranco Camp (3,960 m) → Karanga Camp (4,035 m)
A morning scramble up the Barranco Wall, then a shorter walk across valleys to Karanga Camp. The afternoon is for rest and plenty of water.
Karanga Camp (4,035 m) → Barafu Camp (4,640 m)
A short climb over rocky ground to Barafu, the summit base camp. Early dinner, warm clothes and headlamp ready, sleep until about midnight.

Barafu Camp (4,640 m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) → Mweka Camp (3,080 m)
By headlamp to Stella Point and along the rim to Uhuru Peak. Back to Barafu to rest and eat, then down to Mweka Camp in the forest.
Mweka Camp (3,080 m) → Mweka Gate (about 1,630 m)
A last walk through the rainforest to Mweka Gate for your summit certificate, then back to Moshi.

Lemosho starts quieter and further west and crosses the whole Shira Plateau; Machame starts closer to Moshi. From the Lava Tower on, they share the same path.
The 8-day version splits the long plateau day in two, which helps acclimatisation. Seven days suits fit hikers.
In the forest you may see or hear black-and-white colobus monkeys. Higher up, wildlife is rare.

The most gradual climb, with an extra plateau night.

The most scenic classic route, with the extra day that helps you reach the top.
