Waterfall, coffee and a swim, on the green slopes of Kilimanjaro
The Materuni waterfall through the trees.
A day off from game drives. You walk through banana and coffee farms to a high waterfall, learn to make coffee from the cherry to the cup, and finish in a warm, clear spring pool under fig trees.
Materuni is a village on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro, above Moshi. A local guide walks you to the falls, about 45 minutes to an hour each way, with some steep parts; you can swim in the pool at the bottom if you are brave about cold water.
Afterwards a village family shows you every step of coffee making, you eat a local lunch, and in the afternoon you drive down to Kikuletwa, also called Chemka, for a swim in water that is warm and clear all year.

Pick-up in Arusha or Moshi
We collect you at about 07:00 in Arusha or about 08:30 in Moshi. From Arusha it is 2 to 2½ hours past Moshi and up the green lower slopes of the mountain; from Moshi, 30 to 45 minutes.

A guide from the village leads you along paths between banana and coffee farms to the waterfall, roughly 45 minutes to an hour each way, steep in places. At the bottom you can swim in the pool or just stand in the spray.

Back in the village a family takes you through the whole process: picking the cherries, taking off the husks, roasting the beans over a fire and grinding them by hand. Then you drink what you made. Lunch is a local meal in the village.

After lunch you drive down to the plains to Kikuletwa (Chemka), a natural pool fed by underground springs. The water is clear and pleasantly warm under big fig trees: swim, float and relax.
You are back in Moshi at about 17:00 or in Arusha at about 18:30. We can drop you at Kilimanjaro International Airport instead if you ask.
Bring swimwear, a towel, walking shoes with grip and a change of clothes. The path to the falls can be slippery after rain.
