Tarangire Day Trip from Arusha

If you have one free day in Arusha, spend it in Tarangire. The elephant families here are among the largest in Tanzania, and the old baobabs make the park look like nowhere else.

You leave Arusha in the morning and are in the park in about two hours. From then on the day is all game drive, with as many kilometres as you like and a lunch stop on a rise that looks out over the park.

Elephants are the reason most people come, but Tarangire also has lions, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, impalas and warthogs, and, with luck, a leopard resting in a tree. The dry months, roughly June to October, are the best, when animals crowd along the river.

   We collect you from your Arusha hotel between 07:30 and 08:00. Your vehicle is a 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, so everyone can stand and look out on all sides.

   Inside the park your guide follows the elephants and whatever else the day brings: families of females with calves of every age, lone bulls, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, baboons and ostriches, and the cats if they show themselves. Lunch is at a picnic spot with a wide view; keep an eye on the monkeys, who like lunch as much as you do.

   After a second drive in the afternoon you head back to Arusha, arriving in the early evening.
