The lowest-cost way we know to sleep in the Serengeti and drive down into the crater. You share the vehicle with up to five other travellers and camp at public campsites, with a cook looking after the meals.
Group safaris leave on fixed days, every Monday and Thursday, and run when at least four people have booked. Everyone gets a window seat and the vehicle has a pop-up roof.
Camping here means public campsites with shared toilets and showers, dome tents and foam mattresses. It is simple and sociable, and the nights under the stars in the Serengeti and on the crater rim are part of the experience. Bring a warm sleeping bag: the rim is cold at night.

Your journey
Day 1
Meet the group and drive to the Serengeti
Arusha → Ngorongoro highlands → Central Serengeti
Your guide collects you from your Arusha hotel in the morning, where you meet the rest of the group. The route goes through Mto wa Mbu and Karatu, over the Ngorongoro highlands and down onto the Serengeti plains, with a game drive on the way to the campsite. It is a long day in the vehicle, about 7 to 8 hours with stops.

Day 2
Serengeti morning, crater rim at night
Central Serengeti → Ngorongoro Crater rim
An early game drive in the central Serengeti, when animals are at their most active. After lunch you head back east to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and pitch camp on the crater rim at about 2,300 metres. Keep your warm jacket close: the evening is cold.

Day 3
Down into the crater, back to Arusha
Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha
After an early breakfast you descend into the crater for a game drive of up to about six hours with a picnic lunch. Buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, hippos and lions are seen often, black rhino usually far off. In the afternoon you drive back to Arusha, arriving in the early evening.
