Nyerere, the old Selous, is wild, green and quiet, with a river at its heart. This trip drives you there from Dar es Salaam for two nights of game drives and a boat safari.
The road is long, about 300 km and 6 to 7 hours with stops, the last part on gravel. In return you pay much less than flying, and you have a private vehicle and guide in the park.
The highlight is the afternoon on the water: hippos, crocodiles and water birds along the Rufiji or one of its lakes until sunset. Nyerere is also one of the strongholds of the African wild dog, though they are only seen now and then.

Questions
Before you book
Drive or fly to Selous?
Driving costs much less but takes 6 to 7 hours each way. Flying from Zanzibar or Dar takes about an hour; see our fly-in Selous trips.
Is Nyerere the same as Selous?
Yes. Most of the former Selous Game Reserve became Nyerere National Park in 2019; many people still call it Selous.
When is the best time?
June to October, the dry season. Many camps close or reduce for the long rains, around April and May.
