Overview
Tanzania's new standard-gauge railway puts Mikumi within reach of a day trip from Dar es Salaam. You ride the express train to Morogoro, drive into the park, and are back at your hotel the same night.
It is a long day, but it costs far less than flying and avoids the slow road out of Dar. On the express train Morogoro is about two hours away, and the Uluguru Mountains appear as you arrive. From there it is about 1½ to 2 hours by road to the park.
Mikumi's open plains make animals easy to see: elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, impalas and wildebeest, with hippos in the pools and lions on lucky days.

Your guide meets you at Morogoro station and drives you about 1½ to 2 hours to Mikumi National Park. The middle of the day is spent on a game drive across the plains and past waterholes and hippo pools. Lunch is in the park, at a picnic site or a lodge, depending on the route.

How long is the day?
Long: you leave before dawn and return late in the evening. About four hours of the day are on the train and three to four in the car.
